In 1954, the Arc of Denver was formed by parents of children with cognitive disabilities. We were one of the first Arc’s in the nation. At that time, little was known about the potential of people born with cognitive disabilities. The children were denied public education, adults often lived in institutions, and many families were shunned by their communities. At first, the Arc of Denver started a group home, but the organization realized that created a conflict of interest with the core goal of advocacy. The home was sold, and our commitment protecting civil right was made concrete.
In 1963 Arc Thrift was founded to provide funding for a professional staff, and in 1967 we hired our first Executive Director. With the efforts of parent volunteers, we were able to effect systems change which required Denver Public Schools to enroll all children. We have also assisted in the deinstitutionalization of individuals in the State Home and Training School at Wheat Ridge. We are proud to have pioneered parent training and support for young people entering the system of child supports and transitioning to the adult system. We have become a resource for our constituents and for state and local governments.
We continue to be funded largely by the operations of Arc Thrift Stores. We are also supported by generous philanthropic partners and our members.
